FAQs

Q: Will I have my own class or will I be with a teacher?

A: All trainee teachers are placed with an experienced class teacher who will be their class teacher mentor for the year long programme.

Q: How many schools will I train in?

A: Trainees complete a main placement school experience which takes the majority of the year with a shorter second placement after Christmas. You will gain experience in KS1 and KS2 from the two schools. In addition to your two school placements, you will also spend time immersed in special schools to develop your understanding of how to support children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Q: What age group will I train in?

A: The Fareham and Gosport Primary SCITT programme is an aged 5-11 programme meaning that training will take place from year 1 to year 6.

Q: Is there a salary linked to teacher training

A: The training programme at Fareham and Gosport Primary SCITT is fee funded and not salaried. Please find details funding options here.

Q: Do I get a choice in which school I train in?

A: Yes, once offered a place on our programme, we ask new trainees to be proactive in visiting schools from our partner schools list they are interested in. There is ongoing communication between partner schools to ensure there is a successful match ready for the start of the programme.

Q: Are there any tests or assessments?

A: Whilst there are no tests or exams, trainees will be formatively assessed throughout the programme to support progress and summatively at the end of the programme with recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status.

Q: Do I need to have my degree certificate before I apply?

A: All original qualification certificates will need to be presented if candidates are invited to interview. However, if applying for initial teacher training for the September of the same year you complete your degree, certificates are not often available until later. In this instance, candidates are required to present confirmation from their university of their degree outcome prior to starting the programme.

Q: I haven’t got one of my GCSEs, can I complete an equivalency?

A: Yes, please see details of the equivalency providers here. This must be completed prior to the programme starting.

Q: Do I need to have school experience for teacher training?

A: No, we enjoy working with people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. There is no requirement to have prior school experience. However, we would recommend spending time in a school if you are considering teacher training as it is likely to help with your decision making about a move to becoming a teacher.

Q: What are the times of a typical working day?

A: A typical day on our programme would start no later than 8.15am and would finish between approximately 4.30pm and 5pm.
